About

IMG_0836.JPG

Juliana Cadavid is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice unfolds within the intimate, domestic spaces that inform and shape parts of her work.

Quirkyness, colour, scale and instability are very much part of her imagery and process through the use of methods that vary between drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, writing and mixed media installations. Engaging with diverse materials she explores interpretations of material commodities, the uncanny, made up domestic objects and reminiscent of almost ordinary familiar but unfamiliar places or things such as furniture, rooms, inside and outside spaces.

Exploring threads of kinship, the emotional architecture at home, silently inquiring belonging and displacement beyond our physical borders. I examine the muted complexities of identity, social perceptions, and the poetic in our experiences that constantly shape us through life.

Through owned narrative elements, Juliana creates works that invite reflection. Based on personal observations of architecture, surroundings, public space and the private, she seeks to capture the essence of places, rather than their exact image. She often works with both watercolor, oils and acrylics playing with scale and with found materials often in the form of wooden furniture, which she paints on and rebuilds into sculptural installations where painting meets three-dimensional setups. Recurring motifs are chairs, dressers, doors and wardrobes, which together form spatial stories about memory, presence and absence.
